IHSS Medication Help

Two people can both say "I need help with medication" and mean completely different things — and IHSS actually treats them as two different service categories. Knowing which one applies helps you describe the real need accurately at assessment, instead of it getting lumped into the wrong bucket.

Reminders and Simple Assistance

If someone's medication is already set up (in a pill organizer, for example) and what's needed is a reminder to actually take it, or physical help opening a bottle or a blister pack, that falls under Non-Medical Personal Services — the same category as repositioning and other non-clinical physical assistance.

Prescribed Medical Procedures

If the task is something a doctor has specifically prescribed and would otherwise require a nurse — injections, wound care, catheter care, tube feeding — that's Paramedical Services instead. This category requires physician authorization on file; it's not something a social worker approves just based on a description, it needs the actual medical order behind it.

If you're not sure which applies, describe the task exactly as it happens: "I remind her to take her pills each morning" and "I give him his insulin injection twice a day" point to two different categories, even though both start with "medication help."
